Seven signs of disconnected spreadsheet processes

The warning signs

Look for seven patterns: repeated data entry; multiple versions of the same file; broken formulas; unclear approval ownership; slow reporting; inventory differences between sheets; and processes that stop when one person is absent. One issue may be manageable. Several recurring together suggest a structural problem.

Keep what still works

Spreadsheets remain useful for analysis and planning. Identify the records that need consistent access, permissions, and change history. Move those operational records into a suitable system while preserving flexible spreadsheets where they genuinely help.

Design around a real workflow

Select one process, such as stock adjustments or purchase approvals. Document the information people need and the decisions they make. A focused tool that makes that workflow reliable is more useful than a large application with no clear owner.
